Verbal vs written rent agreements in Uganda

Many Ugandan rentals start with trust and a phone call. That can work — until it does not. A one-page written summary protects both sides.

Minimum to write down

Parties, property address, rent UGX, deposit, start date, notice period, utilities, and repair responsibilities.

WhatsApp counts if clear

A message thread stating terms you both confirm is better than nothing. "Agreed as discussed" with bullet points helps.

Witnesses

For larger deposits, a third party witnessing handover is old-fashioned and still useful.
