Decoding Kampala rental legalities — essential tenant rights

Uganda renting runs on relationships — but relationships without receipts break badly. "Legalities" sounds intimidating. For most tenants it means: who can enter, when rent can change, and what happens to your deposit when you leave.

What most agreements cover (even informal ones)

Names of parties and property location

Access and privacy

Landlords need access for repairs; tenants need notice. Agree what "reasonable notice" means — 24 hours vs same-day — before tension arises.

Rent increases

Increases mid-lease should be discussed, not sprung. If nothing is written, you still have leverage from relationship and documented payment history — but written terms win arguments.

Deposits

Document condition at move-in with photos. Deposit disputes are the most common fight. Your inspection checklist is legal hygiene.

Keep rent receipts, messages, and photos. Escalate calmly: written request, then mediation, then professional advice if needed.
